Wills
A bequest - making a donation through your will - is one of the easiest and most effective ways to make sure that your family and friends are fully provided for by your estate, while at the same time supporting the important work of an organization such as TAALK. A bequest has added advantages. Through your will, you can specify that the remainder of your estate (after your family and friends are provided for) goes to charity, or you can specify that a charity receive a pre-determined fixed gift. If you have already executed your will, you can amend it easily through a simple legal device known as a "codicil." Consult your estate planning advisor for more information.
To make a bequest to TAALK, the following language will be helpful to your lawyer:
There are three ways you can make a bequest:
- Specific Bequest: You designate a specific dollar amount, specific percentage, or specific property to TAALK.
- Residual Bequest: Your estate will pay all debts, taxes, expenses, and specific bequests. The remaining amount -- the residual -- will be transferred to TAALK.
- Contingent Bequest: You can ask that TAALK receive all or a portion of your estate only under certain circumstances. For example, you can name TAALK as a beneficiary of your estate only if there are no surviving close family members. Childless couples sometimes provide for the entire estate to go to the surviving spouse, or if the spouse does not survive, to TAALK.
Life Insurance
Life insurance has long played an important role in charitable giving. Whether you donate an older policy you no longer need or start a new policy to donate to a charity, this is a unique way to turn modest annual premiums into a significant donation. There are four basic ways you can use life insurance to benefit TAALK:
- Name TAALK as your successor beneficiary
- Name TAALK as your primary beneficiary
- Donate an existing policy you no longer need to TAALK
- Purchase a new insurance policy for TAALK
You may claim a charitable deduction for approximately the policy's cash surrender value, and the proceeds are completely removed from your estate.
